You do not need a specific referral to access an appointment with our psychologists - we accept self-referrals from clients. You can call or email the practice directly to book an initial assessment session.
However, many people choose to request a referral from their GP. Under the Medicare ‘Better Access Initiative’ you may be eligible for a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP).
A MHTP would provide you with a Medicare Rebate for up to ten psychology sessions per calendar year.
To secure a MHTP please book an appointment with your GP to see if you are eligible. If you are eligible, we require a referral from your usual GP, a GP from your usual GP practice, or a specialist (e.g. psychiatrist). To receive the Medicare rebate, we must have a copy of your referral at the time of your appointment. Please ask your GP or specialist to fax or email your referral to us before your appointment.
Once you have been deemed eligible for a MHTP and we have received a referral from your GP or specialist, please email Ocean Psychology to book an assessment appointment, making sure to mention which psychologist you have been referred to.
If you do not have a valid MHTP, you may also contact your private health fund to claim part of the consultation fee if you are eligible.
Please note, you may not use both Medicare and private health to fund appointments at the same time. We also accept referrals from third parties including WorkCover, Insurance companies, and the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA).
